When it rains, it pours

Saturday morning. 9:30. Connor and Logan have just gone out the door to play in the backyard. I’m still polishing off a delicious waffle and steaming milk for my latte. Megan yells "Oh" and I turn to see Connor bolting for the kitchen door as rain begins to fall. Megan sccops up Logan just in time to outrun the deluge. Within five seconds the sky opens wide and sheets of rain fall. Connor loves the rain and wants to run around outside but needs an umbrella first.

I think Connor is so fascinated with the rain in Houston for two reasons: it rains much more often than in So Cal and it rains much harder. I am fascinated by the rain in Texas for another reason–thunder! It seems strange if you have never lived in southern California but thunderstorms are almost unheard of. I think I heard thunder about three times during my six years in California. It was an odd sensation to realize I had not heard any thunder after the first 6 or 7 months of residence. I think it took that long because it only rains in the winter.  They also don’t get tornado warnings, but I didn’t miss those.

As an aside, I was going to mow the lawn today but looks like I’ll be waiting till things dry out.

We got that storm Friday night. Lots of thunder and lightning! I remember how fun it was as a kid to play in a warm summer rain! Can’t beat that for sheer exhilaration. Doesn’t appeal to me now, though. Isn’t it strange how we change?

Hi Derek it’s Noel. I really like reading your blog and Megan’s and I definitely had to comment on this post. I think it was two weeks ago that I experienced my first ever REAL thunderstorm and it was amazing and so frightening. California is just pathetic when it comes to expressing it’s emotions through weather. I love Texas! Besides, I got to experience my first kiss in the rain, real rain.
