No Mac for Meg

A quick follow-up on the "Great Coffee Spill of 2006." I successfully replaced Megan’s laptop keyboard with a brand new one from eBay. After snapping the keyboard into place and tightening the screws, the laptop worked without a hitch.

Of course, Megan was hopeful that the laptop was beyond repair thinking that we could rush out and replace it with a brand, new Apple PowerBook or MacBook. Unfortunately, she will have to save that dream for another day.

eBay Keyboard replacement = $35

Apple MacBook Pro = $1999

do-it-yourself husband = priceless

I haven’t had much experience with the Mac computers but if they are as easy and fun to use as the IPod I would probabaly love them. I recieved an IPod video for christmas and I cannot get enough of it. I love the music, ITunes, everything. I’ve become addicted to the multiple podcasts I’ve subscribed to. I downloaded an epiosde of the Office and I got instantly hooked on that show. I now watch it every week. Jobs is a genius for creating yet another thing I can’t possibly live without. The one thing that I could not find for a while was a way to convert my Dvds to the mp4 format. Well, now I have. I use DVD shrink to remove the security and then use Handbrake to convert to mp4. They are both free and easy to use. As of now I have the 3 Matrix movies, Office Space, Serenity (LOVE THIS MOVIE), and the Indy Trilogy. Work is more bearable now.

    Mike,

We have also taken a healthy dose of the iPod elixir. Megan has a pink Mini and I have a black 4GB nano. I was sort of a hold out on the iPod because I really didn’t want to carry around something big in my pocket. The nano changed that of course. I got the nano only weeks after it came out and consequently only a few weeks before the iPod video was anounced. I almost waited for the Video iPod since the 4GB nano was on $50 less than the 30GB Video. But the cool factor of the nano won out. I love it.

What podcasts do you subscribe to? I was listening to The Signal, a Firefly/Serenity inspired podcast. It was mostly a grassroots promotional thing leading up to release of Serenity and has since slowed down in episode production.

As far as the Mac computing experience goes, I have fiddled around with OS X a bit at school although not for daily usage. It looks pretty and would probably be easy to use after some initial orientation. However, it was annoying as a PC “power user” type of person when things were in different places than I expected them to be in Windows (or even Linux). That’s not bad, it is just different.

By the way, I also use DVD Shrink (and DVD Decrypter) to rip DVD’s to my media PC. This way I can keep a collection of DVD’s on the hard drive ready for access at the touch of a button on my remote.

This comment was long enough to be a blog post. I think you touched on about 5 areas of interest with your comment.
