A Caltech publication announced that a Caltech alumnus was the recent winner of the Bulwer-Lytton worst writer contest. The news itself was not so interesting to me as the discovery that such a contest exists. The writer’s submission was funny enough that it prompted me to visit the contest website where I was delighted by the utterly atrocious entries and past winners. Bear in mind, this contest is based on intentionally bad writing rather than judging writing that was unintenionally poor. This at least should help to bolster the ego of anyone involved since losing the contest means that your writing was better than you thought. Contest submissions are one sentence — the opening sentence to the world’s worst novel. Some entries are just bad, but most were hilariously bad. Happy reading.
