First Day

logo_exxonmobil.gifToday, I joined the working world.  This was my first real job.  I’ve had other jobs before–my first was at age 9 when I delivered newspapers–but this is a real job. There wasn’t much work going on today though.  Mostly I just got introduced to people and filled out paperwork. I have my own office, it even has a window. Of course, the name of the previous occupant is still on the door.  But that will change soon enough.

Apparently I started work at just the right time since most people will be gone for the holidays until January.  You might be asking why that is the right time.  Well, I have plenty of time to get paid with little to do besides breaking in my chair.

So it is funny that I am now part of corporate America. I know I have been planning to get a job with a big company for years but I never thought about what it means. I commuted this morning, fighting rush hour traffic, I checked in at the security gate, I got an ID badge, my own company laptop complete with Lotus Notes, I picked up pens and paper in the supply room, and had a discussion about ergonomics.   I suppose I am finally contributing to the GNP.

Anyway, I am spending the weekdays in The Woodlands (just north of Houston) with Eddie, my old college roommate. I’ll be driving to Arlington on the weekends to see Megan and the boys. I’m looking forward to seeing them.  We’re celebrating Connor’s birthday this weekend and it is our wedding anniversary. Wish us a good one.

It is weird to think that I will have to make a choice in about 4 months about what it is I am going to do– enter the real world; postpone it with grad school; etc. Congrats on finally stepping from academia to the real world.
I am excited for you to come up this weekend. See you friday.

Working for the man. I don’t remember Checkers giving you a laptop or an ID badge. Here’s hoping ExxonMobil appreciates you at least as much as they did.

Congrats on your first week of real live work – how fun. I am so excited for you and Megan. My crew should be at Connor’s party so I will see you Sunday!
